Transracial Adoption Essay Example
Transracial Adoption Essay Example Transracial Adoption Essay Transracial Adoption Essay According to Arnold R. Silverman, outcomes of translation of adoption, transracial adoption means the Joining of racially different parents and children together in adoptive families. I chose this topic for two reasons. The first reason would be due to my recent viewing of a movie called losing Isaiah. The second reason is that I am a former foster youth of the state of Oklahoma and I experienced multiple transracial a placements and I often wondered if the methods that Oklahoma Department of Human Services (OKDHS) is using for youth are the best in regards to adoption. Through out this paper I plan to provide an in-depth understanding of what Transracial adoption truly is. I also plan to explain the benefits of transracial adoption as well as the concerns in regard to transracial adoption. In this paper I plan to share detailed statistics to support the knowledge that I found as well bring light to a very sensitive social problem. In the movie Losing Isaiah, there are two women of dramatically different social, economic, and ethnic circumstances locked into a bitter child custody dispute in this emotionally powerful drama. Khailia Richards (Halle Berry) is a poor and drug- ddicted single mother who, while stumbling out of a crack house one night, accidentally leaves her infant son Isaiah in a cardboard box near a trash heap. The next morning, Khailia realizes to her horror that she left her baby behind, and she runs back to the crack spot to retrieve him. However, the baby is missing, and after much search, she presumes that he must be dead. As it turns out, the baby was spotted in the nick of time by sanitation workers and rushed to a hospital, where at the insistence of social worker Margaret Lewin Oessica Lange) the babys life was saved. Margarets heart goes out to the baby, who, along with illnesses brought about by neglect, suffers from emotional and educational problems often associated with children whose mothers used cocaine during pregnancy. Margaret, a white woman, adopts Isaiah and raises the child with the help of her husband Charles. Four years later, Khailia has successfully gone through drug rehabilitation and holds down a steady and responsible Job as a nanny and housekeeper. She learns by chance that Isaiah is still alive, and she quickly hires an attorney to help her reclaim custody of her son. However, Margaret loves the child and is not about to give him up without a battle in court. This movie made me question who is right? Does pigmentation or culture matter? Above all, what has love got to do with it? Social workers and Judges in Juvenile courts across the country are daily making these decisions of terminating parental rights and placing children in what they see as stable homes. Losing Isaiah is not a fantasy but a present reality. How to resolve these issues of custody is the dilemma for all involved. There are not any easy answers. I entered OKDHS custody of the age of six. After 12 years, I aged out of OKDHS custody and by the time I had left it was documented that I had experienced over 42 different placements. This is defiantly excessive but not uncommon. Throughout my experience in DHS custody I had a variety of pasta beer and I want that I ever truly consider the nationality of my foster parents. As an adult I didnt realize that Denmark early in the developmental years I nave black and I believe that was definitely needed to help me create and develop identity that I had. As I got older, I begin to realize that there were not as many foster homes available for teenagers. I also believe that this is definitely an influence to the reason why I was placed with more white foster parents. At the age of 16 1 met the individuals that are currently consider my parents. Yes, they are white but I often question if I would be the same person if they had adopted me form birth. When transracial placements first begin in the United States in the years following World War II, they were generally applauded or ignored by social service professionals and the black community. Social workers. When transracial placements first begin in the United States in the years ollowing World War II, they were generally a applauded or ignored by social service professionals and the black community. Social workers expressed some anxiety about the workability of these placement, the little doubt about the need for desirability as a number of transracial adoptions increased dramatically in the late 1960s, criticism greatly increased. The changing was due to a rise in movement, it is greater emphasis on the ethnic pride led many racial cultural minorities to question transracial placements. Increasing criticism developed within the black community Native Americans also expressed deep concern about the relatively large numbers of Indian children placed with wiping objections the transitional placements 1970 when the national Association of Black social workers expressed vehement opposition to the actual practice of transracial adoption. They even went farther and stated that that placing black children and white homes is a form of cultural genocide. As a result of this criticism, it was definitely a noticeable decline in transracial adoptions. It is noted that since the national Association of Black social workers expressed its bjections, the adoption of black children by whites have diminished considerably. Yet the adoption of Asians by whites have continued at a level of several thousand a year, and has been a moderate expansion in number of Central and South American children adopted by white parents. According to the adoption of foster care analysis reporting system from June 2006, African-American children comprise about 60% of the total population under the age of 18 yellow. Reports state that 34% of the children in foster care in 2006 were African-American. These numbers can truly be ut wrenching and somewhat shocking. Knowing the numbers it is clear to understand why there are so many African-American children in foster care. It is easy to see how transracial adoptions and placements could take place. The question really comes to be is transracial placements in the best interests of the children. There are a variety of studies that have been done to measure the adjustment of transracial adoptees. Through out my research it was very evident that there is a need for much more research due to the lack of current day data. McRoy and Zurcher eported the first of studies in 1983. This investigation compared 30 white families who adopted black children with 30 black families would adopt black children. I was truly intrigued by their findings. The transracial familys predominately live in white communities and their children attended predominantly white schools. The study showed that racial differences where rarely discussed at home. The children felt they had little in common with blacks and had no desire to associate with. Out of the 30- transracial adoption families only six described as acknowledging their childrens acial identi ty and the need to provide them witn a black role models. In the final group, six families consider their family structure to be interracial, their children and integrated schools, and encourage them to emphasize their black heritage. As for the interracial adopting black families they predominantly lived in black communities that would assume that the children were replaced in kinships and association with black peers. Stating they will not have problems with identity. The authors were deeply concerned about the children whose problems with race I idnt have been described above. They were concerned with the white parents whose attitudes encourage this. They were even more concerned with the Whites parents ability to respond to the necessity of equipping the child to become bicultural and to realistically receive the historical cultural black-white relations in American society I believe that their efforts were definitely beneficial to the social work in todays society. Personally, Im not opposed to transracial or interracial adoption but I do feel that there are key steps family should take to prepare for dopting a child that is not from their race. I also believe that there should be detailed training and resources provided to the families that have decided to make the step toward transracial adoption. Saying color doesnt matter is Just as bad as saying one is racist. You cant ignore an individuals race and you defiantly shouldnt teach a child to ignore their race. Race is a part of one identity and it must be taught to be embraced. Love can be shown to anyone at any time but the ability to truly embrace ones identity is a reflection of oneself. David Bowie and Gender Performance Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
David Bowie and Gender Performance - Essay Example He, in the words of Philip Auslander, can sing ââ¬Å"in many voices and from many subject positions without identifying clearly with any of themâ⬠(Auslander 106). By not tying up gender too closely to identity, Bowie is able to demonstrate the degree to which gender is comprised of actions and choices rather than states of being, per se. In David Bowieââ¬â¢s music video ââ¬Å"Life on Mars,â⬠Bowie demonstrates and adroit understanding of the relationship between action and gender, putting on and taking off gender as it suits his lyrics and his messaging. David Bowie, more than almost any performer before him, communicated with all the senses available to him: his image was just as important as his sounds. He thus developed images of himself that aided him in delivering messages for his music. For this reason, one of the most prominent examples of Bowieââ¬â¢s deconstruction of music relate to his physical appearance. Our society tends to conflate physical appearance with identity: in race politics, for instance, identity is often a visible feature, and our society goes out of its way to display other identifying marks as openly as possible, with everything from gender based dress code to ââ¬Å"hanky-codesâ⬠which use handkerchiefs to indicate sexual preferences. The fact is, however, that physical appearance, while informing identity, is not the same thing, especially where gender is concerned. Physical identity relates to gender solely in the ââ¬Å"choicesâ⬠(Butler 903) that are made: the choice to apply this product to oneââ¬â¢s face, or the choice to wear a particular style of dress. David Bowieââ¬â¢s music video for ââ¬Å"Life on Marsâ⬠plays off of this idea of choice through conscious contrasting of different gendered performances. Bowie appears against a white background, wearing extensive face-make up, ââ¬Å"womanizingâ⬠his face through making aesthetic choices associated with femininity. He brings the p erformance over the top, applying blue eye liner, pink lipstick, and dark, thick mascara. However, when the camera pans out, it is apparent Bowie chooses to wear a suit, complete with a tie ââ¬â one of the overriding symbols of patriarchal control of our society, and one of the few styles of dress that, even in the era in which he was performing, was still relatively confined to male use. He thus deconstructs gender into presentation choices by presenting both masculinity and femininity on one body, and embracing what each entails easily with the flick of a camera and a change in focus. Bowie uses this divergence to great effect when combined with the lyrics. ââ¬Å"Life on Marsâ⬠consists of a series of surreal images that flash one after the other, including ââ¬Å"cavemenâ⬠and ââ¬Å"lawmenâ⬠attacking the wrong person (Bowie). He thus plays his female personaââ¬â¢s criticism against the ridiculousness of patriarchal control while at the same time referenci ng that patriarchal controlââ¬â¢s influence over the character, through masculine clothing on the presumably female character. By referencing the brutality associated with masculine violence from the perspective of a woman ââ¬â a gender that he chooses to portray rather than is assigned by sex, Bowie is able to demonstrate how such violence is not natural but rather a choice made as a way of defining and participating in particular gendered groupings. There are few artists in the world who have been as willing as David Bowie to

Commercial Poultry Keeping Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words
Commercial Poultry Keeping - Research Paper Example It is also preferred to other protein sources since it provides white meat, which is less in cholesterol. Birds are the most popular stock kept in the world approximately 15.9 billion by 2009 since it is kept by most people in the household e.g. women, children, old men. In Kenya, they are around 30million where 25million are indigenous and 5million are exotic, in which 3.5million are layers and 1.5million are broilers. This therefore creates a gap of deficiency in poultry meat and eggs which to entrepreneurs, is a big opportunity gap to be filled up by meeting the the customersââ¬â¢ or market demand to provide these products in required quantity. Having carried out a thorough research about this opportunity after a long period of time and studied the trends in the market supply and demand for poultry products, I found it profitable to start up a commercial poultry farm situated in the capital city of Kenya, Nairobi. The company, ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢KUKU COMPANY LIMITEDââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ was started to keep broilers to provide the cityââ¬â¢s population with sufficient and healthy value added poultry meat sold in a very health friendly, modern and classic butcheries. Company Location The company's production unit is located in the Kibera slums, Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya. Concepts of Money Measurement
Concepts of Money Measurement Business Entity Concept can also be known as separate entity concept. A business entity concept is the financial activities are record distinct from the people who finance it such as owners, creditors, customers, and employers. The accounting records reflect the financial activities of a specific corporate entity. So, the business should separately from the proprietor or investor. When the profit is return in to the business, the profit must be taken into account. For example, the sole trader invests available funds in the market share account. These available funds are not affecting the financial status of the business itself. Money Measurement Concept Money Measurement Concept is expressed in monetary term. Every transaction is records in terms of money. If the transaction cannot be measured in monetary term, then the transaction cannot be taken into account. Going Concern Concept Going concern concept is the business that expected that a business will continue to operate its business for the next 12 months or next accounting period. This concept assumes that the business is going on steadily training for year to year without reducing its operation. When an enterprise liquidates or scale down a part of operation of the enterprise, the ability of the enterprise to continue as going concern concept is not impaired normally. Materiality Concept This materiality concept is refers to purposes paying attention to important events and ignoring insignificant accounting items as well as suggests small aster purchases or improvements should be initially written off as an expense. Prudence concept Prudence concept is taking a proper caution in measuring profit and income. Prudence must be exercised when preparing financial statements because of the uncertainty surrounding many transactions. In this concept, income should not be anticipated at all possible losses should be provided for. a.) Give FOUR reasons why depreciation may occur. The definition of the depreciation is refers to noncash expense that reduces the value of an asset as a result of wear and tear, age, or obsolescence. Most assets lose their value over time and must be replaced once the end of their useful life is reached. The main reason of the depreciation is due to the physical wear and tear and the passage of time. For example, the value of the car is reduced over time as new model is introduced to the market, or the value of used motor vehicles is lower than a similar model but new motor vehicles. The second reason is obsolescence of the asset. For instance, the old machine in a factory is become more obsolescence due to time that the machine used. After many years, the value of the machine is depreciated because the residual or scrap value of the asset and similar new machine is come out in the market. The third reason is passage of time. Some assets diminish in value on account of sheer passage of time, even though they are not used. For example, the patent rights, copy rights and lease hold property. The forth reason is depletion of the asset. The depletion is to provide for the consumption on charge against earnings, based on the amount of wasting natural resources that are taken out of total available reserves during an accounting period. 2 b.) A firm buys a motor vehicles in January 20X5 for RM10,000. Calculate the annual depreciation for the first four years using. Reducing Balance Method, at an annual rate of 20%. Reducing Balance Method: Depreciation: Reduced Balance: Year 1 (20X5) 20% x RM 10,000 = RM 2,000 (RM 10,000 2,000) = RM 8,000 Year 2 (20X6) 20% x RM 8,000 = RM 1,600 (RM 8,000 1,600) = RM 6,400 Year 3 (20X7) 20% x RM 6,400 = RM 1,280 (RM 6,400 1,280) = RM 5,120 Year 4 (20X8) 20% x RM 5,120 = RM 1,024 (RM5, 120 1,024) = RM 4,096 Straight Line Method, if the vehicle is to be sold in four years time for RM2,000. Explain clearly the difference between capital expenditure and revenue expenditure. Capital expenditure is acquired to be used in business operation to generate revenue for a period of more than one year. Capital expenditure is the money that spends on buying asset. For instance, office equipment and motor vehicle are the examples of the capital expenditure. Capital expenditure also can be considered as the useful economic life of the asset. Therefore, the expenditure incurred is allocated over the period it is used to match the revenue earned. On the other hand, revenue expenditure are incur in the current year in the business operation. The revenue expenditure is the expenditure on the wages, premises, and utility bills. Therefore, the revenue expenditure need to written off to the profit and loss account in the year in order to measure the profit or loss. This is an accounting concept termed matching and accruals concept. Revenue expenditure also is the money that spends to obtain the use of the asset and maintain the dairy operation of the business. b.) Analysis of Out, Out by Robert Frost :: Out, Out Robert Frost Poems Poetry Essays
Analysis of Out, Out by Robert Frost "Out, Out--" by Robert Frost is a poem about a young boy who dies as a result of cutting his hand using a saw. In order to give the reader a clear picture of this bizarre scenario, Frost utilizes imagery, personification, blank verse, and variation in sentence length to display various feelings and perceptions throughout the poem. Frost also makes a reference to Macbeth's speech in the play by Shakespear called Macbeth which is somewhat parallel to the occurrences in "Out, Out-." Frost begins the poem by describing a young boy cutting some wood using a "buzz-saw." The setting is Vermont and the time is late afternoon. The sun is setting and the boy's sister calls he and the other workers to come for "Supper." As the boy hears its dinnertime, he gets excited and cuts his hand on accident. Immediately realizing that the doctor might amputate his hand, he asks his sister to make sure that it does not happen. By the time the doctor arrives, it is too late and the boy's hand is already lost. When the doctor gives him anaesthetic, he falls asleep and never wakes up again. The last sentence of the poem, "since they (the boys family and the doctor) were not the one dead, turned to their affairs" shows how although the boys death is tragic, people move on with their life in a way conveying the idea that people only care for themselves. Frost uses different stylistic devices throughout this poem. He is very descriptive using things such as imagery and personification to express his intentions in the poem. Frost uses imagery when he describes the setting of the place. He tells his readers the boy is standing outside by describing the visible mountain ranges and sets the time of day by saying that the sun is setting. Frost gives his readers an image of the boy feeling pain by using contradicting words such as "rueful" and "laugh" and by using powerful words such as "outcry". He also describes the blood coming from the boy's hand as life that is spilling. To show how the boy is dying, Frost gives his readers an image of the boy breathing shallowly by saying that he is puffing his lips out with his breath. When talking about the saw, Frost uses personification and repetition. Personification is seen when he says that at times it can run light and at others it has to "bear a load", talking as if the saw was a person which had to carry something.

Genetically Modified food should not be banned Essay
Food is the basic requirement for living, as more and more people need food while the population was increased every year, food is becoming an important issue in the world. The invention of Genetically Modified food is a reasonable solution to solve this issue. Therefore, the Genetically Modified food should not be banned for several reasons. In addition to the fact that Genetically Modified food already provides benefits to us, there are several considerable profits to agriculture, environment and human health. Genetically Modified food should not be banned while they provide benefits to agriculture. The high productivity is creating by Genetically Modified food; the GM crops double the food yield by improves the pesticides and fertilizers in the crops. ââ¬Å"the productivity gains from G. M. crops, as well as improved use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, allowed the worldââ¬â¢s farmers to double global food output during the last 50 years, on roughly the some amount of land, at a time when global population rose more than 80percent. â⬠(Prakash, C. S. , Conko Gregory, 2004, p17) The GM food not only improves the productivity, but it also put the insect resistance and weather resistance into the crops. ââ¬Å"Examples include insect-resistance rice for Asia, virus-resistance sweet potato for Africa, and virus-resistance papaya for Caribbean nations. â⬠(Prakash, C. S. , Conko Gregory, 2004, p18). Compare to the traditional crops, GM crops can provide resistance to bugs and insect or virus-resistance, thus, the GM crops can grow well then the traditional crops. Because the GM crops have resistance to insect, farmers do not need use pesticide to their crops. Furthermore, using of GM crops can reduce the damage from pesticide to the land, and protect environment. Genetically Modified food has benefits to the environment when they provide advantage to agriculture. GM food can reducing the using of natural resources while they growing, such as water. ââ¬Å"In 2000 alone, U. S. farmers growing bioengineered cotton used 2. 4 million fewer gallons of fuel and 93 million fewer gallons of water, and were spared some 41,000 ten-hour days needed to apply pesticide. â⬠(Prakash, C. S. , Conko Gregory, 2004, p18). GM crops not only reduce the using of natural resources, but it also decreases the damage of farming land. ââ¬Å"With potentially reduced environment consequence, such as reductions in agrochemical use, including pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers. â⬠(Schaal, Barbara, 2002, p110), the less herbicide used on land, the less damage that land have. In addition, the GM crops protected environment by reducing the using of natural resources and herbicide. GM food provides benefits for human health, it not only decreases the negative effect, but it also proffers nutrition which human need. The indirect negative effect from pesticide is worked on human body, and it is damaged human health, ââ¬Å"In China, where pesticide are typically sprayed on crops by hand, some 400 to 500 cotton farmers die every year from acute pesticide poisoning. â⬠(Prakash, C. S. , Conko Gregory, 2004, p18). Every year, people and farmers were dying from acute pesticide. However, GM crops contain the insect resistance which means farmer does not need acute pesticide to the crops. Therefore, GM food can provide advantage to human health by reduce pesticide need. GM food also can furnish nutrition that human require, ââ¬Å"Among the most well known is Golden Rice-genetically enhanced with added beta carotene, which is converted to Vitamin A in the human body. ââ¬Å". In next a few years, GM food will improve to provide further nutrition to benefit human health. There people who oppose Genetically Modified food suspect that long-term effects are unknown. However, the Genetically Modified food have been investigated, there are no negative effect found on GM food on current market. ââ¬Å"While traditionally developed foods are not generally tested for allergenicity, protocols for tests for GM foods have been evaluated by the Food and Agriculture Organization of United Nations (FAO) and World Health Organization (WHO). (Campbell, Jonathan, 2006 p67). In addition, scientist still focus on develop Genetically Modified food to achieve more and more benefits to human. GM foods may give us a long-term effect, but it will not be find on the current market. The opponents also consider that Genetically Modified food is not safe and it has negative effect on human health. Nevertheless, Genetically Modified foods on the international market have no risk for human heath. ââ¬Å"GM foods currently available on the international market have passed risk assessments and are not likely to present risks for human health. In addition, no effects on human health have been shown as a result of the consumption of such foods by the general population in the countries where they have been approved. â⬠(Campbell, Jonathan, 2006 p67) Thus, the GM foods will not provide a negative effect on human health. Although Genetically Modified food is not used in every single country, Genetically Modified food is still the suitable solution to solve the food for hungry people. Furthermore, people will not banned Genetically Modified food, and stop the development. In the future, as Genetically Modified food will get more development, it will achieve further benefits to our agriculture, environment and human health.
